Are Tooth Extractions Necessary?

Our first goal, for all our patients at Dental Associates PC in Des Moines, is to take appropriate measures to save the tooth. However, it may be determined that you need a tooth extraction for several reasons. At times, some teeth will need to be extracted because they are severely decayed. Others may be due to advanced periodontal disease or may have broken in a way that it cannot be repaired.

After Extraction

Removal of other teeth may need to be done because they are poorly positioned in the month (such as impacted teeth) or in preparation for orthodontic treatment.

It is important for a blood clot to form to stop the bleeding after tooth extractions. Be sure to continue with a good bite on a gauze pad for 30-45 minutes immediately after the appointment. If the bleeding or oozing persists, place another gauze pad and bite firmly for another 30 minutes. It might be necessary to do this several times to stop the flow of blood.

Once the blood clot forms, it is important to not disturb or dislodge the clot. It is recommended that you not rinse vigorously, suck on straws, smoke, drink alcohol or brush teeth next to the extraction site for 72 hours. Dislodging or dissolving the clot can happen with these activities and slow down the healing process. It is also recommended that you limit vigorous exercise for the next 24 hours, as this increases blood pressure and may cause more bleeding from the extraction site.

After a tooth is extracted you may experience some pain and swelling. Our recommendation is to use an ice pack applied to the area to help reduce swelling and keep it to a minimum.  Pain medication should be taken only as prescribed. Swelling normally subsides after 48 hours.

All pain medication is to be used as directed. If the medication does not seem to be working, please call the office. Antibiotics that are prescribed should be taken for the indicated length of time even if signs and symptoms of infection are gone.  It is recommended that you drink lots of fluids and eat nutritious, soft food on the day of the extraction. Begin eating normally as soon as you feel comfortable.

Resuming a normal dental routine within 24 hours is important.  This should include brushing and flossing your teeth at least once a day.  Proper care will also speed healing and keep your mouth fresh and clean.

Continued care should be taken to follow all postoperative instructions.  It is normal for gums and bone to recede after the extraction, and regular check-ups and maintenance will monitor healing and reduce future problems.
